Hello, and welcome to my first posting of Repurpose Lifestyle. Geoff and I live in a 850 square foot condo in Palm Springs, CA. I have wanted to have a table where we can seat 6 comfortably, 8 people in a pinch....but living in a small space I thought that wouldn't be possible. Well, I found a wonderful large glass top dining room table on eBay a while back. It was amazingly cheap...as I had to go nearly an hour away to pick it up myself.
Anyway.....I got the table and it worked well for a while, but I wanted to be able to move the table around, you know, push it up against the wall when it is just the two of us, or when no one is using the table. By pushing it up against the wall it allows us to gain about two or three feet of usable space to help make our livingroom/dining area walkway more spacious and less cramped.
Solution: I used found lumber (I'll tell you about the pile of wood we got sooooo cheaply on another date), some wood glue, some lag bolts and my favorite thing in the world...second to casters......teflon furniture sliders!!! I LOVE them!
I designed the table base so that it can easily support the mass of glass, but yet can easily slide in and out from the wall depending on who is eating and how many people we are serving.
It really works amazingly well, and we get great comments from everyone.
Take a look.
Sorry the photos aren't that great. But I hope you'll get the idea.
The lumber is actually glue lam beams, cut and glued and screwed together to make the base.
The whole thing, including the glass top from eBay probably ran me about 200 dollars. You can't beat it.
Enjoy,
Scotty P
